The company was founded in 1985 and the centre of The
Hardwood Co is a team of experienced individuals committed to ensuring that
every item of solid wood furniture supplied has been made to their exacting
standards of construction and finish.
Today we have many tried and trusted relationships
with manufacturers and suppliers from all over the world, helping create unique
items of furniture for individuals as well as the trade.
This successful marriage of craft skills and design
know-how has enabled the company to become known amongst both customers and
manufacturers alike as a specialist in the field of handmade wood furniture.
We are proud of our relationships with our craftspeople
and trade partners, which has enabled us to supply quality wood furniture
online and to offer a bespoke custom made solid wood furniture design and
manufacturing service second to none.
Construction
Good design needs to be based upon good construction,
Robert always says, “it’s just not enough to supply someone something that
looks good, it has to look good and still be functioning as well for years to
come if we are to say we did our job properly”.
Making wood furniture by hand using traditional
methods of construction can be tricky and using properly dried wood is essential.
Production begins with the kiln drying of the wood
chosen for an item of furniture. Kiln drying is a highly skilful and
painstaking process; dry too quickly and the wood will become brittle and
crack; too slowly, however, and the heart of the log or plank may remain
damp and will finish up bending and twisting.
Once the wood has been expertly prepared, the
craftsmen set to work fashioning each item by hand, according to our exacting
design, production and quality control demands.
Once each unique item of solid wood furniture has been
constructed it is time for it’s finishing. Here again great skill and
experience is required to ensure the finished item not only looks good today but
will continue to look good in years to come.
How best to finish an item depends upon many
considerations; should it be natural wax on a shellac base to resist scratches
and water marks; what light-resistant stains to minimise bleaching should be
used; or if it is to be painted, what primer foundation should be used before
the paint is applied?
The Hardwood Co is a stickler for ensuring that each item of furniture
supplied meets the highest quality.
