Why We Prefer Sapele Timber Over Anything Else Not all timbers are created equal, different types of wood have different features and profiles that will work best in different contexts and different projects. Sapele is a robust West African Hardwood timber that is reddish-brown in colour and does not have any natural defects like knots and split such as other timbers, in particular softwood. If you are in the market for a strong hardwood that offers durability and weather resistance for your clients, then Sapele could be the right option for you. In this month’s blog post, we explain why we prefer Sapele over other types of wood and why you should choose it too if you want the absolute best in quality & reliability. Replace your windows Around 10% of heat loss occurs through your windows. So if you’re serious about saving on energy bills and driving down heating costs, your windows are a great place to start. Many assume that just because they have double glazing that their windows are energy-efficient. But this isn’t necessarily the case. Not all double glazed windows are created equal, and the [British Fenestration Rating Council](https://www.bfrc.org/) has a scale of energy efficiency ranging from A++ to E. And don’t make the mistake of assuming that replacing your windows means compromising on their style or character. We provide bespoke windows made from the highest quality glass as well as Sapele hardwood, coated with Sikkens microporous paint. So you can get improved durability and energy efficiency without compromising on appearance. 1. Extremely Durable Sapele is a very strong, stable and durable tropical hardwood that is very well suited to joinery manufacture. The timber is sourced from West Africa and Cameroon and is classified as moderately durable with a Class 3 to 4 durability rating. It can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications. With Sapele there is no requirement for preservation treatment as the wood lacks permeability which makes it resistant to treatment, this does also make it particularly suitable for heritage properties. Another durability point to consider is the fact that Sapele is highly rot and weather resistant which in turn makes the wood an ideal choice for external joinery applications such as windows and doors. Durable hardwoods such as Sapele have become virtually synonymous with properties in conservation areas.

When it comes to period and listed properties, there are two main types of windows; Sash and casement. But what is the difference between a sash window and a casement window. Sash windows One of the biggest advantages of sash windows over casement windows is that because the windows slide up and down rather than opening outwards, they are more protected from the weather and tend to last longer. Sash windows became popular in the Georgian era and remained popular until the Edwardian era. Sash windows tend to be far more suited to a traditional home design and can add a distinctive and elegant feel to any home. Their flat designs are often more practical when next to space restricted areas in gardens and patios. Hanging internal blinds and shutters with casement ironmongery can often be a challenge, but with Sash windows this becomes a far easier task, with an end result of more ventilation with no compromises on privacy Casement windows Casement windows are hinged windows, usually side hung. They started to gain popularity in the Edwardian era, and became the window of choice in the 1920s and 1930s onwards. Some of the very oldest windows still surviving today are casement windows. In Tudor times when glazed windows first started to emerge, casement style windows were made by fusing together a series of small panes of glass with lead. Due to their sleek and unobtrusive look it has made them very popular in modern design. Casement windows are often more energy efficient than Sash windows because it fits tightly against the frame when closed Casement windows can also be easier to open, however well maintained Sash windows are too. What is the difference between hardwood and softwood? In general, hardwood comes from a deciduous tree which loses its leaves annually and softwood comes from a conifer, which usually remains evergreen. Hardwoods tend to be more dense The denser a wood is, the harder, stronger, and more durable it is. Most hardwoods have a higher density than softwoods. When it comes to doors and windows, hardwoods are far more common, and with good reason. Softwood however is less expensive than Hardwood. Whilst Hardwood is typically more expensive, this has to be factored against the longevity of Hardwood making it potentially more cost effective in the long run with reduced maintenance costs and increased lifespan. Sapele is a very strong, stable and durable tropical hardwood that is very well suited to joinery manufacture. The timber is sourced from West Africa and the Cameroon and is classified as moderately durable with a Class 3 to 4 durability rating. It is very attractive, thanks to its dark reddish brown appearance. With Sapele there is no requirement for preservation treatment as the wood lacks permeability which makes it resistant to treatment, this does also make it particularly suitable for heritage properties. Although all wood is extremely susceptible to fire, hardwoods are naturally more fire resistant than softwoods. This makes it perfect for properties that may have had a history of fire-damage, or that are particularly vulnerable to fire damage. And whilst hardwoods are, in fact, hard, softwoods are not really soft; they're simply more susceptible to dents and knocks. Impervious to such incidental damage, durable hardwoods such as Sapele have become virtually synonymous with properties in conservation areas.
